چکیده

This paper develops a general approach for the efficient modeling and animation of non-rigid multibody objects. We develop a new family of physics-based modeling primitives that can undergo free motions as well as parameterized and free-form deformations. Starting with parameterized geometric primitives and adding global geometric deformations, local finite-element deformations, mass distributions and elasticities, we create deformable models that display correct physical behaviors. In order to further enhance the accuracy of our shape representation we develop adaptive finite element techniques. Our algorithm ensures that during element subdivision the desirable finite element mesh properties of conformity, non-degeneracy and smoothness are maintained. In this way not only can we represent more accurately an object surface, but also more efficiently because new model nodes are added only when necessary in a local fashion. Furthermore, in the paper we adapt and implement efficient constraint methods for connecting physical primitives together to make articulated multibody objects. We demonstrate the computationally efficient performance of our algorithms for the synthesis and visualization of deformable models, as well as for estimating the shapes and motions of deformable objects.

Development of a Finite Element Methodology for Flexible Track Models in Railway Dynamics Applications

The dynamic analysis of railway vehicles involves the construction of three independent models: the vehicle model; the track model; and the wheel-rail contact model. In this work, a multibody formulation with Cartesian coordinates is used to describe the kinematic structure of the rigid bodies and joints that constitute the vehicle model. A methodology is also proposed in order to create detail...

Dynamics of Flexible Manipulators

This paper presents an application of Continuum (i.e. Lagrangian) and Finite Element Techniques to flexible manipulator arms for derivation of the corresponding Dynamic Equations of Motion. Specifically a one-link flexible arm is considered for detailed analysis, and the results are extended for the case of a two - link flexible manipulator. Numerical examples are given for the case of both one...

The influence of flexibility within multibody modeling of multi-megawatt wind turbine gearboxes

This work discusses the influence of flexibility within the multibody approach for wind-turbine gearbox modeling and validates them, by means of a generic gearbox calculation consisting of one planetary gear stage and two helical stages. First the state-of-the-art rigid multibody modeling with discrete flexibility is discussed. Secondly flexible multibody modeling by means of reduced finite ele...

Parallel computation approaches for flexible multibody dynamics simulations

Finite element based formulations for flexible multibody systems are becoming increasingly popular and as the complexity of the configurations to be treated increases, so does the computational cost. It seems natural to investigate the applicability of parallel processing to this type of problems; domain decomposition techniques have been used extensively for this purpose. In this approach, the...
